Wind Turbines

Wind turbines are one of the best ways of satisfying your energy needs when out on the open sea, charging caravan batteries or providing a localised energy source away from the mains grid. This is especially true when using solar panels is not a viable alternative due to local weather patterns or a lack of a suitable position to install panel-based system. In many cases, however, modern wind turbines are used as part of a 'hybrid' system, combining both solar panels and turbine(s). The hybrid approach often results in a renewable energy system that generates power 24-hours a day, all year round.

Using advanced rotor-blade design and extensive wind tunnel modelling and testing, the latest wind turbines are now virtually silent, almost eliminating 'buzzing' at high speeds. Please be aware, however, that you may require planning permission to install a mast of sufficient height.

One of the most important factors when selecting a wind turbine is the 'start up wind-speed' - this is the wind level at which the turbine will actually start producing electricity. For areas where the average wind-speed is lower, special high-sensitivity blades, low-ratio gearing and high-gain electronics are required. This all means that the wind turbine produces energy at a lower wind-speed, but that the maximum output of the turbine will be lower than the same size 'standard' design.
